The EFL season hasn’t even been over a week and transfer rumours are already beginning to surface.

Birmingham City are set for another huge rebuild, 12 months after signing 13 players during the summer window of 2023. Relegation to League One means Blues will have to build a new squad and their five loanees and eight out-of-contract players need to be replaced.

The first name linked with Blues this summer is Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers. According to The Star, Blues are among a plethora of League One sides interested in Byers at the end of his contract at Hillsborough.

The Star claim Blues, Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United, Barnsley and Blackpool, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, are all keeping tabs on Byers. The 27-year-old is also said to be of interest to Bolton Wanderers and Oxford United, the two teams who will contest the League One play-off final at Wembley.

Byers was a regular in Wednesday’s midfield during the first half of last season to make 22 appearances in the Championship. His only goal came during the Owls’ 2-1 defeat to Blues at St Andrew’s in late November when he followed in a free-kick that struck the woodwork.

He played 16 games in League One for Blackpool as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs. Before dropping down to League One with Wednesday in 2021, Byers played 56 games in the Championship for Swansea City.
