OPINION: Weekend off comes at the right time for Peterborough United

Peterborough United’s November has been a stark contract to the success they enjoyed in the month of October.

Their performances in October saw Darren Ferguson named as the Sky Bet League One manager of the month, and even saw Posh claim top spot, albeit temporarily.

The month ended with a last gasp draw at home against Coventry City. At the time, it was viewed as a good point because Posh scored an equaliser in the 95th minute, but since then Posh have struggled.

Two successive away defeats in the league have seen them fall behind early pace setters Ipswich Town. Posh were beaten 4-3 in a seven goal thriller at Bloomfield Road by Blackpool, before falling to another defeat just three days later at mid-table Shrewsbury Town.

The following Saturday was FA Cup weekend, and even that did not go to plan for Posh. Darren Ferguson’s side needed a late wonder goal from star man Marcus Maddison to rescue a draw and earn themselves a replay, which takes place Tuesday November 18.

Since then, Peterborough United have recorded a victory, but it came in the leasing.com trophy, with Posh fielding virtually a reserve team, making 10 changes from the side that drew at Shrewsbury.

Nonetheless, Posh were 2-1 winners over local rivals Cambridge United, and despite the competition meaning very little to the fans, it will have been nice for them to keep hold of the local bragging rights.

Posh do not have a game this weekend, as it was their scheduled fixture with Bury FC, who have obviously folded as a club.

Having a weekend free could be a blessing in disguise for Posh, although they risk the chance of falling down the Sky Bet League One table.

It gives Darren Ferguson time to work on whatever has gone wrong in recent weeks, and gives the players a rest after three away games in the space of seven days.
